Who sends what

The immediate family usually orders the casket spray, and sometimes pieces like a heart or a pillow. Extended family, close friends and groups like a church or employer often send standing sprays or wreaths that stand near the casket.

Friends, neighbors and coworkers commonly send an arrangement or a plant to the service, or sympathy flowers to the family home. If the family asked for donations in lieu of flowers, a donation is the main gift, though a small plant to the home is rarely unwelcome.

Timing matters. Send service flowers so they arrive before the visitation or service. Sympathy flowers to the home can come any time, and later is often meaningful. Sign the card in a way the family will recognize.
