Homecoming

Homecoming mums? Ask the florist first

Homecoming mums are a big tradition in some towns and rare in others. Call and ask the florist whether they make them and how far ahead to order.

Muskogee Flowers is a free referral line. Your order is taken, arranged and delivered by an independent local florist.

A tradition that varies by school

Homecoming mums started as a real chrysanthemum pinned to a sweater. Over the years, especially in Texas and parts of Oklahoma, they grew into big ribbon creations with bells, trinkets and the wearer's name. Some schools love them. Others hardly see them.

Not every florist makes mums, and we cannot promise that the one you reach does. Ask on the call. If they do, give them the school colors, the student's name and the date of the homecoming game. If they do not, a corsage or boutonniere is a good alternative. See prom corsages and boutonnieres.

Fall is the season, usually September and October. Order a few weeks ahead if you can, especially for custom pieces.
