Outdoor flowers need a different plan
Some services in the Muskogee area are held at the graveside only. Others move from a chapel to the cemetery. Either way, flowers outside face heat, wind and sometimes rain, and a florist can suggest sturdier flowers and a design that will not tip over.
For later visits, such as a birthday, an anniversary of the death or Decoration Day, people often bring a saddle for the headstone, a small arrangement in a cone or a potted plant. Every cemetery has its own rules about what can be left and for how long.
If the burial is at Fort Gibson National Cemetery, the VA has posted specific rules about cut flowers, artificial flowers, potted plants and wreaths. For other cemeteries, call the cemetery office or ask the church or funeral director.
